IBM laptop computers are just as popular today, as they were when they first debuted over twenty years ago. This is due in no small part to the fact that IBM’s laptops, which were sold under the ThinkPad brand name, have had a reputation as being durable and reliable.
Since May 2005 IBM no longer actually manufactures its own laptops because it sold the rights to the ThinkPad line to Lenovo. However, Lenovo has continued in IBM’s footsteps and today it manufacturers high quality ThinkPad notebook computers at prices that can’t be beat.
You can even customize your own laptop if you buy from Lenovo’s ThinkPad website.
Currently, IBM laptop computers are sold under four distinct series, each named after a letter of the alphabet. However, only two of these series really qualify as being considered cheap laptops. The cheapest is the G series, which uses Intel’s Pentium 4 technology and provides relatively basic functionality. The main downside to these laptops, is that they do not use Centrino technology, and as a result tend to have relatively short battery lives.
On the other hand, the R series, the next cheapest line of IBM laptop computers, do use Centrino technology. This means that they will on average have longer battery lives, and be better for wireless use. However, this extra functionality means that an R series ThinkPad is on average 30% more than a comparable G series one.
The other two lines of ThinkPad notebook computers are designed specifically for mobile use. Both the T and X series of IBM laptop computers feature Centrino technology and are meant for mobile business users. The T series, which is slightly cheaper, features security features such as fingerprint recognition.
The even more expensive X series also has these features and are the lightest (starting at under 3 pounds) and longest lasting (Up to 7.5 hours on a single charge), ThinkPad laptops. However, both series are relatively expensive and most users don’t really need the extra features provided by T and X series.
One more thing you need to decide before you buy an IBM laptop computer is what shape you want it in. Used laptops are always the cheapest choice, but carry certain risks. On the other hand, New ThinkPad’s are the most reliable but the most expensive.
Also, you may want to consider a refurbished model as a compromise between the two. Below are some links to the cheapest stores on the Internet to buy new IBM laptop computers as well as links to more information about buying used IBM laptops and IBM refurbished laptops.
